As Dan Drezner said last week, Mitt Romney’s Wall Street Journal Op-Ed from the same was as if the Hulk had written it: “Romney mad at China. Romney smash China.” Easy to overlook Romney’s comments as primary positioning and no more, but is that a mistake? In my opening 2012 column over at Asia Times, I explore how 2012 might shape and strain the existing policy of engagement between the US and China. The fact that both countries are in the midst of major political transitions and that both seemed in economically tenuous condition makes this political strife more troubling.
